Reasonable requests?

My roommate and I do not see eye-to-eye on all things. She cares a lot more about stuff like cleaning the apartment thoroughly every week than I do. This can only help me, since it will probably force me into better cleaning habits. I care a lot more about other things that will most likely annoy her a lot more than I am bothered by having to clean. For instance, she wanted to put on some music the other day. It was a secular artist with whom I was not familiar and I just didn't want to listen to it. This particular point is one that I have mixed feelings about. I listen to secular music from time to time, so I felt a little bit like a hypocrite when I asked if we could listen to something I own instead. She is more than welcome to listen to whatever she wants to listen to in her room and can play any of the music stored on my computer (somewhere around 75 CDs representing a number of genres) in the office or any of my CDs (and I own quite a few) in the common areas. I guess this is a bit of a control thing for me. I want to control what I hear.

She also asked about getting an antenna for the television. I really prefer not to have anything that would give us television reception. I would honest rather not have it. I gave it up as a measure of discipline with my time and have come to see it in a different light over the time I have spent without it. I cannot see any good coming from having it on. If she wants to watch something in the evening there are plenty of DVDs to choose from and I keep trying to tell her than a 2 hour running time on a movie does not mean that it has to be on for two hours. I will quite often put a movie on and then go in another room to work on something. I am not sure how much of a stick in the mud I am going to be on the antenna issue. I really don't want it, but is it that bad?

I am not sure whether her requests or mine are more reasonable, and I am sure that eventually we will find some kind of common ground, but I find myself growing more and more conservative all the time, so I really want her to see things more my way on the TV thing. I am willing to give more on the music thing, but I think ultimately it will come down to taste. She really likes some music that I don't particularly care for, and I am quite sure that she will not at all like some of what I listen to! Maybe we can agree on what is played in the other's hearing with that kind of approach.

That must be a rather difficult situation.

Seeing as you invited her to share with you, you have the upper hand in negotiation.

I think in those circumstances, I would be very inclined to compromise on more things thna perhaps you would. I am perhaps too much of a peacemaker.

I am not sure that having the upper hand is really what I care about. We have to live together, regardless of which one first suggested it, so I think we should come to an agreement that we can both accept.

I may be able to use the "do whatever you want in your own room" approach since she called today and told me that her parents were getting rid of a TV, so she is bringing it home with her.

That is a delicate situation. There is nothing wrong with you controling what you hear, you should be in control of that.

She can easily listen to her music in her room, and if she's really keen on an atenna, she can get the tv her parents are getting rid of an keep it in her room. However, this is vice versa, you can listen to your music in the privacy of your room.

You will both work things out, no doubt ;)

I'm much more picky about the music, but then I'm home more often than she is right now, so I have plenty of "Angie" time. She did play some of her music in her room this evening, and since her door was open I could hear it. I didn't particularly care for the music but at least it wasn't obnoxious.

Her TV is going in the living room since it is bigger than mine. I may let her have my TV in her room. I think she really wants the antenna and I think she wants it in the living room. I really don't want it since I enjoy being "safe" from TV's reach. I want my home to be a haven from the world.

If you do not want a t.v. in the living room, it is reasonable that you do not have one.

Yes. The image-displaying device itself is okay (I like to watch DVDs from time to time), but I want to decide on the programming for myself. :)

I agree, the living room is a space that you both share, and she can easily have the antenna in her room instead.

We had a little chat this evening about this. Women are not meant to live in the same household. We are extremely territorial creatures and don't necessarily agree on what home should feel like.

I am glad that you guys are working things out and discussing things that bother you. That is a great sign. :)
